Last Week In Brandon:

  • Residents packed a public meeting to discuss the proposed new City Plan, which has sparked controversy. Proponents say the plan seeks to enhance public transit and active transportation options, and to make services more accessible. While we don't agree with some opponents who think the plan is designed to limit people's freedom of movement, we do always have concerns about the effectiveness of top-down central planning by governments, never mind the cost to taxpayers of these sort of idealist plans dreamed up by bureaucrats. The plan is still undergoing public hearings and needs City Council approval before it can be implemented.

  • Tyler Bates, set to become Brandon's new police chief on October 15th, said his new role is a "homecoming" after a career with the RCMP. Bates, originally from Winnipeg and with 19 years of policing experience in Manitoba, served as the Director of National Indigenous Policing in Ottawa. He aims to strengthen ties with the community and enhance relations with Indigenous residents. His priorities include fostering a respectful, empathetic police service and addressing biases. He said he is eager to tackle new challenges and make a meaningful local impact in his new role.

  • The City has delayed the fog coating work scheduled for the multi-use path along Maryland Avenue between First Street and Ninth Street. The postponement is due to the path's condition being too deteriorated for the planned treatment. City staff are currently exploring alternative solutions.
